Indexed Universal Life in Henderson

Indexed universal life planning for Henderson, NV savers.

Most people max out their 401(k), maybe fund a Roth IRA, and then run out of tax-advantaged places to put money. Indexed Universal Life insurance — IUL — is what a growing number of financial professionals turn to after those buckets are full. It is not a simple product. But for the right situation, it does something no conventional retirement account can: it lets your money grow linked to market performance, protects it from down years entirely, and allows you to pull it out in retirement without triggering a tax bill.

The Two Jobs an IUL Policy Does Simultaneously

An IUL policy is first and foremost a permanent life insurance contract. Your beneficiaries receive a death benefit whenever you pass away — not just during a fixed term window. That coverage stays in place for life as long as the policy is properly funded.

The second job is accumulation. Every premium payment above the cost of the insurance itself goes into a cash value account. That account earns interest based on the performance of a market index — most commonly the S&P 500 — but with a critical structural protection: a floor of 0%. In a year the market drops 25%, your cash value doesn't drop with it. You simply earn nothing. In a year the market gains 18%, you earn up to your policy's cap rate — typically 9–12% depending on the carrier and current crediting terms.

The result is an account that participates in good market years and sits out bad ones. Over long time horizons, that asymmetry — full upside up to the cap, no downside — has historically produced competitive accumulation without the volatility of investing directly in equities.

How the Index Crediting Actually Works

Understanding the mechanics matters because not all IUL policies credit the same way. The three terms to know:

Cap rate — the ceiling on what you can earn in a given crediting period. If the S&P 500 returns 22% and your cap is 10%, you're credited 10%. Caps vary by carrier and can be changed after policy issue, which is why the carrier's history of cap management matters when comparing policies.

Floor — the minimum credited rate, almost always 0%. This is what distinguishes IUL from variable life insurance, where cash value can actually decrease in a bad market year.

Participation rate — some policies credit you a percentage of the index gain rather than the full gain subject to the cap. An 80% participation rate with a 12% cap on a year the index gains 20% would credit you 80% × 20% = 16%, but capped at 12% — so 12%. A 100% participation rate with the same cap would also give you 12%. Participation rates matter more in moderate-return years.

The Tax Angle Most People Miss

The accumulation inside an IUL policy grows tax-deferred — no annual tax bill on interest credited. But the more significant advantage for high earners is how the money comes out. When structured correctly, you take policy loans against your cash value rather than withdrawals. Policy loans are not taxable income. You're borrowing against your own asset, and the loan is repaid from the death benefit when you pass away.

Done properly, this creates a stream of tax-free retirement income that doesn't show up in your adjusted gross income, doesn't affect Social Security taxation calculations, and doesn't count against Medicare premium thresholds. For people in the 32–37% federal bracket, the tax savings on distributions can be substantial.

This is also why IUL illustration quality matters so much. An overly aggressive illustrated rate can make a policy look far better than it will actually perform. Ask your broker to show you illustrations at a conservative credited rate — around 5–6% — alongside the more optimistic projection.

IUL Is Not the Right Fit for Everyone

IUL works best as a long-term vehicle. The internal costs — cost of insurance, administrative charges — are front-loaded in the early years. Most policies don't become efficient accumulation tools until year 7 or later. If you might need access to the funds in under a decade, IUL is the wrong vehicle.

It also requires ongoing premium discipline. Unlike a 401(k) where you can stop contributions and the account simply stops growing, an underfunded IUL can lapse if the cash value isn't sufficient to cover the cost of insurance — particularly in later years when that cost rises significantly with age.

The clients who benefit most are typically: high earners who have maxed conventional accounts, people who need permanent (not just term) life coverage, and those with a long time horizon — 15 years or more before they expect to draw from the policy.

Why Long-Term Carrier Stability Matters in Nevada

An indexed universal life policy is a multi-decade relationship — cash value builds over 15, 20, or 30 years. That makes the long-term financial health of the issuing carrier more important here than with any other life insurance product. In Nevada, policies are backed by the state's life and health guaranty association as a NOLHGA participant; per NOLHGA's published state information, the life-insurance death-benefit coverage limit in Nevada is $300,000. That backstop does not replace a carrier's own strength — it supplements it. A broker can point to each carrier's AM Best rating and NAIC complaint index alongside the illustration.

IUL products are regulated by the Nevada Division of Insurance, which reviews illustration rules, required disclosures, and producer licensing. Every IUL illustration provided to a Nevada consumer must meet the disclosures required by that regulator.
